However, on July 29th 2011, Google publicly announced the release of their 2nd step into the travel marketplace: Hotelfinder.

The perplexity of today’s travel sites has, since then, become a sort of nightmare: the sleeping giant is awake and well aware of the profitability of the online travel marketplace. Hotelfinder is what Google calls a “new experimental product” to compare hotel rates and book hotels that are found across the web.

At the very beginning Hotelfinder only featured hotel destinations in the U.S. while today the tool has become global, showing destinations all over the World with only 1 restriction: it shows rates in US dollars only. In addition to this, at this stage it seems that Google is not advertising Hotelfinder according to its advertising potential s.

The best and more user friendly feature is perhaps the way maps have been implemented. Once a user selects a city/destination, Hotelfinder provides a map with a polygon that users can change how they want in order to select the areas they want to stay.

While changing the map polygon, the selection of hotels displayed changes immediately and this helps in narrowing down the options. This feature, together with some other filters displayed in Google minimalist way, appears to be really relevant and useful for users who in few seconds can find the hotel they need and compare hotel prices.

We still are on an early stage to affirm how Google Hotel finder will position itself in the marketplace but we can consider the following:

• other search engines such as Yahoo and Bing have already released some years ago their travel applications and they don’t seem to have gained ground;
• it seems that neither Bing nor Yahoo have modified their algorithm to promote their respective travel sites at the expense of fair competition.
